Veteran unable to pay for his groceries hears a stranger say “it’s our turn”

Joining the military is really brave because soldiers do a lot for our country. We should always say thank you to these heroes because they give up a lot to keep us safe. But sometimes, when these heroes come back home, they don’t have everything they need. Luckily, we can help them out.

Picture this: There’s a story that will really touch your heart. A news team found out about a veteran who needed help, and they jumped into action.

On a bright sunny day in Las Vegas, a group called the Fox 5 Surprise Squad went to a local grocery store called Albertsons. They had a cool idea: to surprise people by paying for their groceries. Dave Hall led the team and went up to people who were about to pay and offered to buy their groceries for them. Imagine how happy that made everyone!

As they kept doing this, the store workers pointed out people who really needed the help. One cashier was so moved by what was happening, she was nearly crying with joy.

Then, Dave met Stephanie, a veteran who uses a wheelchair. She was buying food for herself and her dogs, and she was really struggling with money. She told Dave she only had $50 left and didn’t know what to do next.

Dave was thrilled to help her by paying for all her groceries, and Stephanie was super thankful. Then, Dave noticed a man behind her.

Dave asked, “Is this your husband?” But the man was actually a friend of her husband, named Larry. Larry was also a veteran and had started a group called Bones For Blankets to help homeless veterans by giving them blankets. He started this because he lost three brothers to the cold. Larry’s story shows how important it is to help each other.

Larry explained that Stephanie’s husband was often away for work, and he helped drive Stephanie places she needed to go. Despite his own struggles, Larry was determined to help Stephanie, saying no veteran should have to go through tough times like she was.

At the checkout, Larry only had a bottle of dish soap and a piece of candy because that’s all he could afford. Dave didn’t let Larry leave without real groceries, telling him, “You served us, now it’s our turn to serve you.”

Larry was moved by the kindness. He had been taking care of himself since he was a teenager, and now, someone was helping him. He offered to pay Dave back, but Dave said Larry had already done enough.

They filled a cart with food and toiletries, much more than Larry expected that day. Larry was overwhelmed by the kindness shown to him and couldn’t believe how much food he was getting. He had never bought so much groceries before and was very thankful to Dave.

Larry’s habit of helping others, whether in the army or in his community, made it extra special to see him receive kindness. The story of their shopping trip got over a million views online, reminding everyone how important it is to be kind.

You can watch Larry share his story and see the kind moment he was given in the video. It’s a reminder of how much good we can do for others, especially for those who have done so much for us.
