A 10-year-old boy from Tennessee, named Asher Sullivan, has tragically passed away at a hospital several days after being swept into a storm drain, according to his family.
After a storm hit Rutherford County, adults were busy cleaning up and fixing damage, while kids like Asher were playing outside. Unfortunately, Asher was accidentally swept away into a storm drain. His father, Jimmy Sullivan, shared this sad news in a Facebook post on May 9.
Asher was found later in a drainage ditch where he received CPR for a long time. Although his heart started beating again, he had gone without oxygen for too long, causing serious brain damage. His family found out at the hospital that the situation was very severe.
Jimmy Sullivan, who is the superintendent of Rutherford County Schools, asked everyone for their prayers and support. Over the next days, Asher fought hard, and many people followed the updates and sent their well wishes.
Previously, the Sullivan family had faced another challenge when their other son, Declan, was diagnosed with leukemia. Jimmy mentioned, “We are at a loss for words that evil has come after both our boys.”
At the hospital, Asher was on life support, occasionally opening his eyes, which gave his family a little hope. However, an MRI scan showed severe damage to almost all areas of his brain.
As the community in Murfreesboro held a prayer vigil for Asher, his teacher, Amber Peneguy, remembered him fondly as the kid who always tried to make others laugh when they were sad.
Sadly, the situation worsened, and although Asher wasn’t technically brain dead, the doctors said he wouldn’t be able to do much more than move a finger. Faced with a tough choice about whether to continue life support, Asher’s condition suddenly worsened, and his parents no longer had to make that decision; Asher passed away.
In his last act of kindness, Asher’s parents decided to donate his organs to help save others, a decision that reflects his caring nature. His father said, “It’s 100% an ‘Asher’ type thing to do in continuing to be selfless.”
