Detectives in New York City are investigating a tragic incident in which 5-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, were discovered dead inside an apartment in the Bronx on Monday. The New York Police Department responded to a 911 call just after 11:20 a.m. ET, reporting an “aided child” in a residence on East 175th Street in the Mount Hope neighborhood.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found both children “unconscious and unresponsive” in the apartment. Tragically, paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene. The cause of death for the twins is yet to be determined and remains under investigation by a medical examiner. At this point, it is unclear whether foul play is involved.

During a press conference at the scene, NYPD Assistant Chief Benjamin Gurley, who oversees patrol operations in the Bronx, expressed the heart-wrenching nature of the situation, stating, “When you go up and you see two 5-year-olds laying on the floor unresponsive and cold at this time of the year, you can imagine what the family’s going through.”

Despite the shocking discovery, police have reported that there were no apparent signs of trauma. Additionally, carbon monoxide was not detected in the apartment, and there is no known history of domestic violence involving the family. The twins had been sent home from school due to illness the previous week and were at home with their mother on the fateful Monday morning when she discovered them unresponsive.

The father of the twins was reportedly at work when the tragic incident occurred. Both parents are said to be cooperating with detectives. However, the mother, who was understandably distraught, was taken to a hospital for emotional support.

In a poignant twist, Randholf Andujar, who manages a nearby food pantry on Topping Avenue, revealed that the mother and her twins were regular visitors to the facility. He described them as a sweet family, and their regular presence had prompted discussions about providing something special for the children for Christmas. This revelation underscores the heartbreak and shock experienced by the community in the wake of this tragedy.

The circumstances surrounding the twins’ deaths are currently shrouded in mystery, with authorities diligently working to determine the cause. The absence of visible trauma, coupled with the absence of carbon monoxide, adds to the puzzle surrounding this heartbreaking incident. The emotional toll on the family, the community, and the investigators involved in the case is immeasurable.

As investigators continue their work, the Bronx community and the wider public await updates on this devastating incident. The loss of two young lives has left a community in mourning, with questions about how such a tragedy could occur. The focus remains on finding answers, offering support to the grieving family, and ensuring that justice, if needed, is served.
