Rookie firefighter dies on his very first shift, rest in peace

In Georgia, a 20-year-old firefighter named Efren Medina passed away in his sleep during his very first day at work.

Efren had just started working with the St. Marys Fire Department. On his first 24-hour shift on Saturday, April 17, something very sad happened. Even though he was asleep at the fire station, he didn’t wake up.People say they don’t know why Efren died, and they are still trying to figure it out.Efren loved being a firefighter more than anything. Everyone at the fire department is really sad and thankful for all the kind words and support from people. That day, Efren and his team helped someone who needed emergency care. After that, when they all went back to sleep at the fire station, Efren didn’t wake up, no matter how much they tried later on.The chief of the fire department, Tom Lackner, said it’s a mystery because Efren seemed healthy. To help Efren’s wife, Brittany Vasquez, a fundraising page was set up. Efren was a very kind and hardworking guy who was training to save lives as a firefighter and help people as an EMT. Brittany said Efren was always making her laugh and loved being with people. So far, the fundraising page has collected more than $10,000 to help Brittany with the funeral costs, travel, and other sudden expenses.Everyone is hoping to find out why Efren passed away, so his family can have some peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Brittany. Rest in peace, Efren.
