Pierce Brosnan recently opened up about the tremendous sorrow that he felt after losing his daughter to cancer.

Pierce Brosnan grew up without a parental figure in his life. Regardless, he became a natural when it comes to being a father, it seemed like it came naturally for him when he met his wife’s children from her former marriage – Christopher and Charlotte. He considered Cassandra Harris’ children his own. In fact, he was happy to make it official.

The Irish actor said, “We just clicked as a family. To begin with, I was Pierce, then I was Daddy Pierce, and then I just became Dad. Charlotte and Chris have just been amazing in my life.”

When the James Bond star married Australian actress and former Bond Girl, Cassandra, in 1980, he did not hesitate to open up his home and heart to her two children. Then in 1983, the couple had a son, Sean. But when Charlotte and Christopher lost their biological father in 1986, Brosnan decided to officially adopt them and gave them his last name.

Over the span of two short decades, this perfect family was torn apart by two tragedies. Through the years, Brosnan became too familiar with grief and tragedy. During his interview with Esquire in 2017, he said, “I don’t look at the cup as half full, believe me. The dark, melancholy Irish black dog sits beside me from time to time.” What he felt is completely understandable after he witnessed two of his loved ones, his wife and daughter taken from him too soon by cancer.

While filming in India, his wife became seriously ill. She was later diagnosed with cancer and passed away in December 1991. Then in 2013, almost 22 years after his wife’s death, another tragedy broke his heart when his daughter died of the same disease at only 41-years-old. She passed away only two weeks after she got married with her longtime partner, Alex. On her passing, she left not only her husband, but also their two young children, Isabella who was 14 at that time, and 8-years-old Lucas.

He announced this heartbreaking news and said, “On June 28 at 2 p.m. my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer.” He added, “She was surrounded by her husband Alex, children Isabella and Lucas and brothers Christopher and Sean. Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl. We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences.”

During his Stand Up to Cancer event in 2014, Brosnan said, “To watch someone you love have his or her life eaten away bit by bit by this insidious disease, that kind of sorrow becomes an indelible part of your psyche. I held the generous, strong, beautiful hand of my first wife Cassie as ovarian cancer took her life much too soon. And just last year, I held the hand of my funny, wonderful daughter Charlotte before she too died from this wretched, inherited disease.”

His daughter’s death was too difficult for him to handle. He said that he used to always make his daughter laugh and he loved doing that.
