Bees are the important pollinators of many food crops like almonds, apples, avocados, cherries, cucumbers, watermelon, blueberries, cantaloupes and other crops. Most crops rely on honeybees for pollination but these bees are still considered as biggest enemies to humanity. They help to keep us alive. Before the agricultural revolution, about two million years ago, human beings have foraged the land and this has brought about thousands of species of animals to extinction.
Bees play an important role in feeding about 90% of the world’s population. Theses bees are pollinators which make us alive, we cannot live without them. David Attenborough warns that if bees were to disappear from the face of the Earth, humans would have just four years to live. David Attenborough is the voice behind The Blue Planet and Planet Earth.
A 92-year-old documentary maker shared a post on Instagram that read: “In the last five years, the population of bees has dropped by 1/3.” Sir David Attenborough offers a way to make a difference. He said a difference can be made in the humanity by making a paste of sugar and water in a teaspoon then leaving it in the garden or on the lawn so that it will help bees to be hydrated when they get tired.
Attenborough says, “This time of years bees can often look like they are dying or dead, however, they’re far from it. Bees can become tired and they simply don’t have enough energy to return to the hive which can often result in being swept away. If you find a tired bee in your home, a simple solution of sugar and water will help revive an exhausted bee. Simply mix two tablespoon of white, granulated sugar with one tablespoon of water, and place on a spoon for the bee to reach.”
Meanwhile, bees are very important in the ecosystem as they help in regulating food supply because they contribute to crop production. They allow plants to reproduce and contribute to food distribution. They provide foods for animals like birds and insects. Whereas, humans spray pesticides from crops to prevent pests from hindering their growth and on the same hand harm the productivity of the crops because chemicals in these pesticides are harmful to the bees also and this does not allow them to pollinate.
Research shows that almost percent of flower plants depend on bees for pollination and we get rid of the bees in the ecosystem, there will be no plant that will beautify the environment, there will be no bee to pollinate food crops, birds, squirrel and other animals that depend on bees for food will as well not have food. Additionally, bees are the food source of birds and some insects and some animals feed on these insects so if there are no bees, the food chain will be broken and if the source is lacking, the entire food chain will suffer.
Accordingly, a study shows that bees have contributed about $3,250 to crop production per hectare in a year. This shows that bees are really important to our economy because of the value they add to it.
In essence, like Attenborough has said, we can save the remaining bees in the ecosystem by helping them get hydrated with just a teaspoon of water mixed with a teaspoon of sugar and place it where bees can stay like in the garden so as to revive them and by so doing, we save humanity.
