You have probably noticed these diamond shapes on your measuring tape but never thought too much about it. Unless you are using this daily, there is a small chance that you would notice these small diamond-shaped details on the top of the measuring tape.

Once and for all, let us set this record straight and learn why these features are in the tape and what are they used for.

YouTuber Tom Hintz from the website NewWoodworker.com, posted a video on his YouTube channel explaining what these diamond shapes are all about. He also shared why these are included on the tape and also how to use them to your advantage.

There are different types of markers when it comes to measuring tapes. Unless you are a professional, you probably only heard of the measuring tape used by seamstress or garment makers. Most of us are only aware of the inches and the centimeter markings but other than that, we don’t usually notice them.
Now, what do these black diamonds signify?

According to Hintz, these black diamonds are meant to signify the center area between the studs when you are working on a home or a building. This symbol is always set at the 19.2 –inch mark. Hintz shared that before you would be able to use it, you must first understand the “8-foot rule.”

On his website, Hintz shared that many tape measures come with red numbers every 16 inches. This is a common spacing for studs in house framing. This spacing will allow six supports on each 8-foot-length. This means that you would be able to do a pencil etches at the red marks so you can easily identify the placements of the studs. This is perfect if you are trying to locate the center of the studs.

Hintz continues to explain:

“If you divide the 8-foot space we have been using by 5 we get a spacing of 19.2”. The black diamonds on the tape measure represent that spacing. The first black diamond is at 19.2” and after that black diamonds appear at 38.4”, 57.6”, 76.8” and 96”, or 8-feet. That is one less stud for every 8-feet of the wall, counting the beginning and end studs.”

Now that you know what these black diamonds are for, it is time for you to discover new markings. If you want to know more about these, it is time for you to watch Tom Hintz video. If you take the time to sit down and watch this short tutorial, you would be able to completely understand how to measure using the “bottom scale” as well as understand how to utilize the 16-inch red box symbol.

If you have the basic understanding of every feature that you see on your measuring tape, you will find it easier for you to work with it the next time. In addition to this short tutorial, Hintz advice is to always read, understand and also follow the instructions that came with the tools that you purchased. Even with measuring tapes, they come in different types. Do your research, specifically about the brand and the product to fully understand how to use it to your advantage.

Did you find Tom Hintz’s tutorial useful? Hopefully, this can at least give us a better understanding of what that black diamond is all about.
