In the quiet of the night in Cleveland, the sound of little Jailyn crying could be heard. She was just a toddler and she cried a lot, but there was nobody there to comfort her.
Jailyn’s mom, Kristel Candelario, had gone on a vacation for 10 days in the summer. She left Jailyn in a playpen with some milk bottles. A neighbor’s camera showed Jailyn crying a lot, even once at 1 a.m., two days after her mom left.
Kristel was far away, enjoying her time in Puerto Rico and then Detroit with a friend. When she got back home on June 16, after being away for about 10 days, she found her daughter had passed away.
Kristel had to go to court, and she told them she was sorry for what happened. She admitted to making a big mistake and was given a life sentence in prison.
In court, a doctor talked about how much little kids need their parents and how sad and scared Jailyn must have been. It was a very hard time for her, being alone and not having enough to eat or drink.
The judge and police said this was one of the saddest cases they’ve ever seen. They talked about how Jailyn was found and how much she needed care.
Kristel’s parents said she was going through a tough time and didn’t mean to hurt Jailyn. They asked the judge to understand how hard things were for Kristel.
But the judge said Kristel should have taken better care of her daughter. He said moms and their kids have a special bond, and Kristel broke that bond. He decided she should spend her life in prison to think about what she did.
A detective read a poem to remember Jailyn, saying she will always be remembered and that justice was done for her. It was a very sad story, reminding everyone to take care of each other.
