Tammy recounts how her daughter, Selena, became addicted to social media after being given a smartphone for her 10th birthday. Selena’s excessive screen time, up to 20 hours a day, took a toll on her life, causing a decline in school work, damaging her friendships, and leading to depression. Despite Tammy’s attempts to limit Selena’s screen time, she spiraled out of control and eventually died by suicide after being bullied on social media at age 11. This tragedy will be highlighted on an episode of Dr. Phil, titled “Growing up Digital: Are Your Kids Addicted?” airing on Monday. Additionally, Dr. Phil will discuss with the father of a young man who claims that his son’s obsession with a video game led to a violent incident when the game was taken away.
