Knowing that they are pregnant is one of the best things that an expecting couple could experience. Having a baby in the family is purely a blessing and many parents cannot wait to meet their newborn. However, despite how you take care of the baby during pregnancy, unexpected things can happen. And sometimes, babies are born prematurely.
When David and Kate Ogg from Australia found out that they were having a baby, they were over the moon.
Conceiving was not easy for the couple. They had been trying for three years that’s why when they finally heard the news, they were ecstatic. And when the doctor pointed two heartbeats in the ultrasound, they were speechless. But the joy and excitement were shortlived.
Twin pregnancies are more complicated that is why their babies were born, they were heartbroken after learning that one of them as declared dead shortly after Kate gave birth at 26 weeks. After trying to bring him back to life, the doctors declared Jamie dead after 20 minutes.
According to the doctors, baby boy Jamie was dead. But instead of just giving up, Kate and David had other plans for this baby with his healthy sister, baby Emily.
The Oggs asked the doctors if they could spend some time alone with their baby boy to say their final goodbye before they take him away, which of course, the doctors agreed. They were heartbroken as they continue to cradle their motionless baby. Kate unwrapped the baby from his blanket and held him against her skin. The couple crawled into bed with the baby and spoke to him quietly. They sand him lullabies as they keep holding the baby close to their skin. Every now and again, the baby would gasp. The medical team had already told the couple that these were just reflexes and the baby would still remain lifeless.
But then a miracle happened!
After holding the baby for two hours, they realized that he just started breathing on his own. The doctors were shocked. They kept talking to Jamie until he would slowly show signs of life. However, the doctors keep insisting that their baby was gone. Then Kate started to feed him a little breastmilk on her finger. To their surprise, Jamie began breathing normally.
Kate said, “I thought, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on.’” She added, “A short time later he opened his eyes. It was a miracle. Then he held out his hand and grabbed my finger. He opened his eyes and moved his head from side to side. The doctor kept shaking his head saying, ‘I don’t believe it, I don’t believe it.'”
David said that he feels very fortunate because he has a “very strong, very smart wife.” She did what she felt she needed to do.
These two beautiful babies are now nine years old and they’re both perfectly healthy. What happened during his birth had no negative effects on Jamie.
Kate spreads awareness about the importance of skin-to-skin care for sick babies. In fact, in many British hospitals, this is now being used. The ‘kangaroo care’ technique, named after the way kangaroos hold their young in a pouch next to their bodies, allows the mother to act as a human incubator to keep babies warm, stimulated and fed.
Do miracles really happen? For those who believe, they do.
