I Finally Decided To Ask My Neighbor Why He Puts Cotton Balls In His Garbage Can Every Week

Doug

If you have a mum like mine, that cooks every day and uses fresh ingredients, and with a lot of foods all ending up in the trash, you will be familiar with the bad smell of the trash bag when it is time to take it out. Without the fancy garbage cans and scented bags that makes it easy to keep trash for a few extra days without the smell that is popular today, you might have to live with the odor till the trash is taken out.

But there is a simple trick that can help you cope with smelly trash even if you are one of those people who doesn’t have the time or energy to take out the trash every day. With this trick, you should be able to keep your garbage cans and of course, your kitchen smelling quite fresh till it’s time to take it out.

Apartment therapy came up with a list of impressive hacks and tricks you can use to avoid smelly trash. This includes throwing in a dryer sheet in the bag, adding kitty litter to the bottom of the can, sprinkling baking soda (the all-purpose kitchen hack material) and adding a cotton ball with essential oil to the can.

While all these tricks are quite impressive, the ones that really caught my attention was the cotton ball with essential oils hack; a simple and very effective way to get rid of that perpetually smelly trash.

How it works?

You don’t need much to pull off this trick, just a cotton ball or two and a few drops of essential oil to scent the cotton balls up. Any type of essential oils can do this trick but some are more effective than the other at fighting bad odors. Add some drops of oil to soak the balls the balls of cotton and place it in your trash can or bag. Not only does it get rid of the bad smell in the can, but it also leaves the area around it smelling great as well.

The best and most effective option to go for is the citrus-based essential oils as it is great for fighting bacteria and getting rid of doors. You can also enjoy additional benefits from using this trick as well. Stronger oils such as mint, tea tree, and neem can also help to keep insects and rodents away from your trash which prevents it from getting knocked over and also makes it easier to take out when it’s time to do so.

How often should you do it?

How often you decide to add the scented cotton balls to your trash bag depends entirely on you. You can decide to add it whenever you add it each time you change a bag or wait till you start noticing a smell before you do so. It works either way, although there is a good chance that you get more of the cotton ball if you place at the bottom of the bin just under the liner and have it replaced at least once a week.

This is a trick you will find quite helpful whether you have so much piled up trash or you take yours out regularly. You never know when a trash will decide to smell bad, its trash and that is what it is meant to do. But you can save yourself that trouble with this simple trick.
