A 9-year-old boy from Florida named Elyas Amyr Marshall-Rodriguez, who had beaten cancer, sadly passed away in a bus accident. His family shared the news on a GoFundMe page. After Elyas got off his school bus, he went under it to get a football. But the driver didn’t see him and accidentally drove over him. This happened around 4 p.m. at the Waterford East Apartments in Orlando.
Elyas’s aunt started the GoFundMe page to help his mom. She said Elyas had fought a blood cancer called lymphocytic leukemia since he was 2 but had been doing well lately. Despite his tough battle with cancer, Elyas was always smiling and full of life. He loved football and dreamed of playing in the NFL someday. He was very close to his community in Waterford East.
His aunt said losing Elyas was heartbreaking, especially for his mom, who is raising three kids by herself. One of Elyas’s siblings has autism and is also legally blind. The money from the GoFundMe, which has raised about $20,000, will help with the costs of Elyas’s funeral and support his family during this tough time.
Elyas went to Lawton Chiles Elementary School. The accident happened when the school bus started moving just as he crawled underneath it. The bus driver, who had been driving for over ten years, didn’t realize Elyas was there and accidentally ran over him. This was a very sad event for everyone, including the Florida Highway Patrol officers who were at the scene. They checked everything, including videos from the bus and the area, and talked to the driver and a witness to understand what happened.
