Every parent just wants the best for their child. They are hoping that they would grow healthily and happily, and become successful adults in the future. This is why many moms and dads make sure that their children are enrolled in different extra-curricular activities and limit their screen time. Parents do their best to learn more parenting strategies for their child to be nurtured properly.
We have to admit that no matter how much we try, there are things that are out of our control. According to a study conducted by a group of researchers at Edinburgh University, they found out that nature seems to have a high influence when it comes to a person’s intelligence. They are looking to link IQ, genes, and the overall health of an individual, but they discovered that there are shared genetic influences between the cognitive skills, body shape, brain size, and the educational attainments.
This means that the physical attributes of a baby, like the size of the head, can indicate how smart they will become as they grow older! 100,000 individuals between the ages 37 and 73 participated in the survey and according to the results obtained from the data, babies who are born with big heads are most likely to become more intelligent later in life compared to the others.
An average baby is born with about 13.5 inches head circumference and it is expected to grow to at least 15 inches in the first month. Parents.com reveals that boys tend to have a slightly larger head compared to girls but the average difference is less than half an inch. This only means that if a baby’s head circumference measurement is more than what is stated above, then it can be considered as a big headed baby and could grow up to be very smart.
A team of scientists analyzed the blood, urine, and saliva samples. In addition to this, they also studied the participants’ lifestyle habits and backgrounds before they came to this very interesting conclusion which was then published in the Journal of Molecular Psychiatry. The researchers wrote:
“Highly significant associations were observed between the cognitive test scores, and many polygenic profile scores, including intracranial volume, infant head circumference, and childhood cognitive ability.”
Another benefit of having a big head for babies is that this also includes a higher chance of getting better scores on verbal-numerical tests, and also in obtaining university degrees. One of the researchers named Saskia Hagenaars stated, “The study supports an existing theory which says that those with better overall health are likely to have higher levels of intelligence.”
However, we also have to take into consideration that in some rare cases, a large cranium could mean a different thing. It can be an indication of a physical or developmental disability. But if your baby has been cleared by the doctor, then there is no need for you to worry! Having a big head as a baby can be simply a reflection of a bigger-than-average headed mom or dad. Certainly, this is not an indication of a learning disorder nor is it a disability.
There are other signs that can indicate that you have a gifted baby. This will include a large vocabulary at a very young age, strong motor skills, and the ability to recall past memories clearly. If you have a ‘big-headed’ baby, you are lucky!
