Passover is a special holiday for Jewish people that comes in the spring and lasts a whole week. During this time, Jewish folks don’t eat or keep certain foods called chametz, which are mainly five types of grains: wheat, spelt, oats, rye, and barley.
Some Jewish people also stay away from another group of foods called kitniyot, which are things like corn, rice, and beans.
So, what does this have to do with Coke? Well, the usual Coke recipe is okay to drink any time of the year because it’s kosher. But, it has corn syrup in it, and that’s a no-no for Passover, especially for Jews with roots in Eastern Europe. That’s why, just for a little while, Coke swaps out the corn syrup for sugar. You can tell this special Passover Coke apart because it has a bright yellow cap!
Why is this yellow-capped Coke so popular? It’s not just Jewish people celebrating Passover who love this “Original Taste” Coke. Tons of Coca-Cola fans grab these bottles with the yellow caps because they really like how it tastes or they prefer to stay away from high fructose corn syrup.
And guess what? This special Coke doesn’t cost any more than the regular kind!
