Karina Courtmanche, a 79-year-old woman in hospice care, recently had her final wish granted – a heartfelt reunion with her beloved horse, Bella. Based in Bethany, Connecticut, Courtmanche has shared a special bond with 30-year-old Bella since the horse was a foal. As her health continues to decline, Courtmanche’s dying wish was to see Bella one last time, a sentiment she expressed to her caretakers.
Michelle Walker, a registered nurse and case manager for Connecticut Hospice, revealed that during their conversations, Courtmanche constantly spoke about her wish to see Bella. Struck by Courtmanche’s longing, Walker decided to work in collaboration with Courtmanche’s nursing home to fulfill this last wish. The coordination involved organizing transport to the small farm where Bella resides. To ensure Courtmanche’s safety and comfort during the journey, an ambulance was arranged so she could remain on a stretcher and receive necessary care during the ride.
On arrival at the farm, a touching reunion ensued as Courtmanche got to see Bella again. In a tender moment, she petted her horse’s nose and fed her a carrot, savoring the precious time with her beloved companion. Walker expressed her gratification in fulfilling Courtmanche’s wish, stating, “I’m very excited that I’m able to give her this last wish. It’s important to her, so it’s important to us.”
Upon Courtmanche’s eventual passing, arrangements have been made for Bella to remain under the loving care of Bittersweet Farm. This endearing story highlights the profound bonds between humans and their animal companions and the efforts hospice staff make to accommodate the final wishes of those in their care.
