Embroidered Ultrasound Image Give Blind Dad A Chance to “See” His Baby

Nothing can compare to the excitement that fathers-to-be feel when they see their baby’s ultrasound for the first time. That is why Nathan Edge from the UK also wanted to experience that feeling when his pregnant girlfriend had her first ultrasound in November.

So everything went fine during the ultrasound and his girlfriend, Emma Fotheringham, brought home a new ultrasound photo of their baby. However, Edge will not be able to experience as others do. And this broke his heart.

During his interview with Today, 26-year-old Edge said, “When we got home, we shared the scans with our family and everybody was getting excited about seeing the baby for the first time. Being blind rarely ever gets me down — I’ve come to terms with it very well — but suddenly it hit me, ‘I’ll never be able to see this scan.’”

Edge posted a Tweet with the ultrasound photo even though he himself is not able to enjoy it. But he still wants his family and friends to see their baby and celebrate this amazing blessing with him and his girlfriend. However, he was not aware that a friend was having a plan so that he too can see the scan in his own way.

Deb Fisher reached out to Fotheringham with this clever idea. Fotheringham shared this with Metro UK saying, “She said she was so happy for us both but sad that Nathan was unable to see our baby grow on our scan photos. She said she had never embroidered before but would love to try and embroider all of our scans for Nathan to enable us to experience the joy of our baby boy growing together.”

Even though it was going to be difficult, but Fisher was up for the challenge. The image will require different thicknesses of thread and multiple layers in order to create a tactile, three-dimensional image for Edge.

You see, this excited father-to-be has been visually impaired since he was only 6-years-old. Then he went completely blind when he reached 18. Still, with the embroidered ultrasound image, he would be able to ‘feel’ it. It took Fisher three weeks to finish this project. And once it was done, she gave it to Fotheringham who kept it a secret until she could give it to him as an early Christmas present.

And when Edge received it, he was over the moon with joy and excitement. He tweeted a photo of the embroidered ultrasound image of their baby. He wrote: “How incredible is this [hearty eyes]… Received this amazing surprise today… it’s an embroidered tactile version of our 12-weel baby scan, so for the first time as a blind dad to be, I’m able to build a picture of our baby scan through touch… Can’t describe how amazing this is…”

On his interview with ITV, Edge explained that he was shocked and that he never thought that anything like this would be possible. He added, “…let alone it coming from a friend who just had the idea. First of all, that shock, that amazement, that actually now, just like everybody else, I’m included in this special part of the journey.”

We are hoping that 2021 will be one of the best years for the couple as they wait for the new addition to their family!
