A few years ago, 9-year-old Elysia Laub made a shocking discovery in the backyard of her home. She couldn’t believe her eyes when she discovered a new-born baby in her backyard. It was a normal summer afternoon, and the little girl was playing in the yard when she heard rustling in the bushes. Initially, she assumed it was one of their two pet pigs, but she decided to probe further anyway, and that was when she made the astonishing discovery.
“We have two pigs; I thought they had a baby or something.” She told Wish-TV, but on a closer look, she discovered it was a baby. “I just saw pink legs kicking away.” Young Elysia explained.
“I knew it was alive and I knew we had something. I could not second guess myself. I knew we had to go get help.”
The young girl immediately rushed home to call her mother who was just as shocked when they found out that it was a newborn baby girl. The woman had a hard time believing someone would leave a baby out there. She initially thought `it was a robotic doll and she was being pranked. But on a closer look, she found the umbilical cord and placenta still attached which confirmed it was indeed a real baby much to her shock.
Narrating her reaction when she found the baby Heidi, Elysa’s mom said: “I ran to the baby and scooped it up, and I said, ‘Elysia run to the house and call 911 as soon as possible.”
To keep the baby warm, she had to wrap her in a blanket until the authorities arrived. The baby who had been left in the hot sun had suffered sunburns, but other than that she was healthy. Doctors were unsure of how long the baby had been out in the sun, but by estimates, it could be anytime between a few hours or even overnight. Maggot had already accumulated on the umbilical cord and placenta when she was found. But all the same, she was perfectly okay and just needed minimal care. Rescue officers called her “Miracle Baby Jane Doe.”
During a press conference, Sheriff John Buncich said:
“The baby was found in a very rural area, and to think that if the 9-year-old wouldn’t have gone outside, this could’ve had a very different outcome.”
The police immediately began scanning the entire area with helicopters and canines, but it wasn’t until a week later that they were able to find the girl’s mother. Although no other information was released to the public because of her age, ABC7 Chicago reported that she is teenage juvenile from Lowell. The case has since been handed over to the Indiana Department services, and prosecutors are trying to determine if a lawsuit will be filed against the runaway mother or not.
Elysia’s story has since gone viral and has been viewed online nearly 2 million times. Although many people have hailed Elysia as a hero, the 9year old is always quick to say that she didn’t find the baby all by herself but had help from someone.
“Somebody helped me. It was God.” She said. Many of those who heard the story are also impressed that the little girl acknowledges God rather than take credit for it herself. Here are some of the comments about the little girl.
“What a gem you are, little girl, for helping this baby. God bless you for it.”
“That girl is something else; she knows God worked through her.”
“LOVE LOVE LOVE HOW THEY CREDITED GOD.”
We are glad Elysia was able to find this baby on time and averted tragedy.
